BUCS Premiership Women’s’ Rugby
Loughborough v. Sheffield (Away)
27/01/10
Final Score: 90 -0
The Loughborough girls were looking to seek their eighth match without defeat as they travelled to Sheffield for their first match following the Christmas break.
Having already beaten last season’s points record in the first half of the season, the students did not fail to disappoint once more with and outstanding performance against the Sheffield side.
The game kicked off in the forwards as Ellie Philips charged through the breakdown followed up by continued hard work by the pack which released fly half and captain, Elinor Snowsill who offloaded to winger Nikki Ward for the first of Loughborough’s tries.
From then on, the floodgates were opened as Loughborough began to descend on the try line with every possession of the ball. Emily Thorne, Amy Sheldrake and pack leader Danni Allen kept up the momentum to allow Harriet Miller-Mills, back from injury, to run one in under the posts. After just 10 minutes Loughborough were 12-0 up thanks to the increasingly consistent conversions by Snowsill.
Loughborough built up the phases once more and begin to stamp their dominance on the match without a Sheffield response and continued to pressurize their opposite number with Fiona Jones particularly standing out as she enjoyed her debut in the scrum half position.
After just 20 minutes, the score stood at 26-0 in Loughborough’s favour and Sheffield attempt to fight back but to no avail as the premiership high flyers turned over all Sheffield ball.
By the second half, the impressive Loughborough team ran in try after try as they really began to find their form and Sheffield were all out of any chance to score with only lack of discipline from the away side allowing them to move up the field. However, they could not convert their chances to points when given the chance and Loughborough simply stormed back up the pitch. Excellent performances from Penny Taylor, Ludi Lacrosse and the unbelievably speedy newbie Beth Newton, fresh into the BUCS squad, put Loughborough out of sight with a magical 20 minute hat trick from Newton and close to a record breaking result of 14 tries. The final score: ninety points to nil.
